    Animals
    General Info
Animals are collected in the action stages by destroying an enemy that has an animal inside it. Animals increase the stats of chao, enable the chao to do certain activities or abilities, and also affect the overall look of the chao in terms of color and shape. Each animal has a color designation, which can be used to easily figure out which stat an animal increases. Blue animals randomly increase one of the chao's four main stats--fly, power, run, and swim. Green animals increase a chao's running ability. Purple animals increase a chao's flying ability. Red animals increase a chao's power ability. Yellow animals increase a chao's swimming ability. If a chao receives many animals of a particular color (except blue since it is random--and therefore there's no guarantee what you'll get in stats) before it matures/evolves, the chao will become a chao of that stat, which will give it a distinct look.

    Chao Gardens
    General Info
This is one of two places where chao are raised. The other being the Chao Adventure game to be played on the VMU. There are three gardens in the game, which are described a bit in more detail below. Each garden has a Warp Hole, which allows you to transport eggs or chao from one garden to another. Each garden also has a Transporter, which allows you to transport eggs or chao into the VMU for storage/transfer or to play Chao Adventure. Gardens are considered full when there are 8 chao in them. If there are more than 8 in a garden, chao can randomly leave to go to another garden.

    Station Square
Location: The elevator on the left in the hotel

This garden has monitors which give tips on raising chao. It's also the garden that has Chao Stadium, which allows you to access the races. It is represented with a blue color on the Warp Holes.

    Mystic Ruins
Location: Take the trolley in the cave near Tails' workshop

This garden has a few high up places that you (and the chao) can reach. The water in certain spots is high enough that you can actually drown here. It is represented with a green color on the Warp Holes.

    Egg Carrier
Location: Spell "E-G-G-M-A-N" in front of the doorway in the inside of the ship

This garden has a beachline and you must be very careful when bringing animals to chao in this garden. You can easily lose animals in the water, which causes them to disappear. As a result, this isn't the greatest spot to raise chao in terms of giving them animals. It is represented with a red color on the Warp Holes.

    Chao Races
    General Info
There are three different types of races--Jewel, Beginner, and Multi-entry. As the name implies, multi-entry allows you to have more than one chao in a particular race, while the other two limit you to select one chao. If your chao wins a Jewel race, it will win a jewel and you'll get an emblem. If your chao wins a Beginner race, it'll say "Cool!" Randomly, a chao will be selected (you'll see sparkles around the chao) for you to "cheer on"--which will give the chosen chao a temporary speed boost if you do cheer it on.

    Pearl
Power race with the chao pushing a ball and then a quick dash to the finish.

    Amethyst
Running race with musical distractions that some chao won't resist. It also has a swimming short-cut that some chao will use. If the short-cut is used, the chao will miss the distractions.

    Sapphire
Mostly a running race with a climbing segment. It ends with swimming.

    Ruby
    Swimming race.

    Emerald
This race is unlocked after winning the other 4 races (Jewel version). It is the longest race and combines all the other courses. However, instead of pushing a ball, the chao will shake a tree to knock down fruit to eat.

    Chaclon the Chao
In the beginner races, you'll see this chao after you've beaten all 5 Jewel races. It'll be lying down on its side and gives all the chao a head start before speeding along and winning, unless your chao is fast enough to beat Chaclon--and that won't be easy.

    Chao Adventure (VMU Game)
    General Info
This game allows you to view your chao's stats, name your chao, increase your chao's stats, and battle other chao. The game ends when you reach the end by going through 5 of the 15 different locations, or your chao runs out of HP. In some of the locations, you'll find Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Big, or Gamma. During the trip, you'll also run into chao that want to fight you. You need to beat them, but also watch your chao's health so that you have enough to reach the end. You might also come across chests that will sometimes contain fruits. You can see the path and a few other details right here. Playing this game often will drain the batteries of your VMU, so make sure you have batteries handy.

    Fruits
By playing a memory matching game (and winning it), you can win fruits for your chao. Whenever you win a fight against a chao during the adventure, you can also get these fruits. Also, during the adventure, sometimes you'll come across chests that'll have fruits in them, or be empty. Each fruit has a different effect.
